The Black family of the future will foster our liberation, enhance our self-esteem, and shape our ideas and goals.

— Dorothy Height

My name is Tarra Mitchell.  I am the daughter of Thero Mitchell, Retired Lieutenant in the United States Coast Guard and Dr. Gloria Mitchell, Educator and Consultant.  I am the Sister of Thero Mitchell, Jr and Sarah Mitchell, and Tita to Trey and Xak.  I am the proud mother to Niara, Malkia and Jamila Patrick and Grammy to Nazura and Dakhari.

I have lived around the world and across the United States.  I have done jobs I imagined and some I never dreamed of.

I started my official career at the age of 39 as a Math Teacher and TOSA supporting 6-12 grade mathematics education and between then and now, I have been

  • First Black administrator at Everett High School (school started in 1880)

  • First Black Principal at Totem Middle School (school started in 1940s)

  • Elementary Principal in Seattle Public Schools

  • Director of Special Education in Seattle Public Schools

  • University adjunct professor for undergraduate, teacher certification, and principal certification

I am currently the proud Executive Director and Senior Vice President of City Year Seattle/King County.

The version of me that is presented here is not static in this moment,  I am the culmination of the versions I have mentioned here, the unspoken versions, and the versions yet to be realized.
